The agonizing screams of pain quickly woke the Scots, who won the battle with ease, aided no doubt by the wounds caused by thorns in the feet of the Danish Vikings.
The symbol of the thistle, with its stalk topped by barbed full majestic purple flower, was widely used in coats of arms of many of the noble houses of the Scottish Highlands and their clans. The first kings of Scotland used it as his personal symbol. Today it is used by many Scottish associations, rugby clubs, team’s football and other sports organizations also look at Thistle in their logos, identified as a symbol of Scottish pride and toughness of its people.
In 1687 King James II created the only Scottish order of chivalry, the “Order of the Thistle”. This is one of the oldest orders of chivalry in the world that still exists today.
For more than 1000 years, the thistle has been a distinctive symbol of Scotland and its people, appearing often accompanied the motto: “Nemo me impune lacessit / Wha daur meddle wi”, something like “Who dares to mess with me “.
